Painstakingly developed by the current owner Zheng-Hong Shi, the store’s signature radish cake is made from hand-rolled dough, salty radish strips and sweet mung bean paste. The pastry’s unique semi sweet and semi salty flavor is what makes it so popular. Recently, five other flavors have been developed, including adzuki bean, Chinese yam, green tea, taro and pine nut. Furthermore, other pastries are available too, such as mung bean cake, fruitcake, macadamia nut candy, Matsumoto shortcake and pineapple cake. The store has received honors such as the “Tourism & Travel Gold Medal and Consumer Boutique Award”.
Matsumoto Bakery was established in 1911 and sold mainly pastries. Since there was no storefront at the time, the owner carried a wooden food box containing fried shallot rolls, thousand-layer cakes, minced pork cakes and peddled them on the streets.
