During Guangshu Period in the Qing Dynasty, Chui Zheng crossed the ocean to Taiwan alone with nothing but good baking skills. He collaborated with Mr. Huang, a merchant in Lukang to create the Yu Zhen Zhai Bakery and in so doing laid the foundation for Lukang’s reputation as a place for producing specialty pastries.
Later, the duo split up and Chui Zheng opened the Cheng Yu Chen Bakery next door.
The bakery is well known for its innovative flavors such as Phoenix Eye Cake, Lard Popped Sticky Rice and gelidium jelly. Through the decades, these pastries became legendary specialty products of Lukang.
Founded in 1887, Cheng Yu Chen Bakery is one of the most distinguished bakeries in Lukang; the extremely popular Phoenix Eye Cake and ingot-shaped cake etc.
