Changhua City Office reclaimed the Cooperative Bank building across from the Confucius Temple and turned it into the Gu Yue Folk Museum. The museum houses exhibitions of Changhua's history and archives of the valuable historic records and photos. The "Changhua Champion" section at the third floor of the Folk Museum introduces many of the rarely known "Changhua Champion" events to the visitors. It is a good place to get to know the history and the places of Changhua. Mr. Huang Zhi-Nong from Zuoyang Studio, the company commissioned to plan the exhibition, said that most people think history is boring, so they planned a theme on “The No. 1s of Changhua”; the purpose is to bring people to know the county’s history and culture.
Gu-Yue Folk Museum was originally the residence of Lord Li from Zhangyi in Taiwan when it was still under Qing rule. The parameter of the complex extends to Shrine to Virtue and Piety and Gu Yue Jing (now National Changhua Living Art Center) in the east to Gu Yue Yuan Restaurant (now Zhongshan Market) in the west, East Gate Legeng Gate in the south (now the front of Traffic Police Corps) and Union Hall (now Changhua Arts Museum) in the north. The residence is located at the foot of Mt. Bagua in Zhangyi.
The museum has 4 stories and a total floor space of 940.27m2, forming a public space offering comprehensive education exhibition and cultural exchange functions. The museum consists of art & culture performance venue, folk craft workshop, exhibition room, Babuza Historical Records Room, AV theater, conference room and observatory, introducing the development history of Changhua City and housing a collection of Taiwanese folk relics complemented by other artworks, industries and unique characteristics from across Taiwan. In addition, country cultural activities are held regularly, making it a new attraction for visiting Changhua’s stunning sceneries, history, and culture, thus creating a brand new opportunity for reviving historic monuments in Changhua City.
According to the Changhua County Annals during the Daoguang Period, “Gu Yue Jing is outside the East Gate near the foot of Mt. Bagua. It is the former residence of the Li Family. Suddenly, the emergence of spring water attracted a large number of people, and so County Magistrate Hu donated his remuneration to purchase the well.” During the Jiaqing period, County Magistrate Ying-Kui Hu erected the “Gu Yue Jing Stele” on the left hand sidewall of Chenghuang Temple in Zhangyi, this goes to demonstrate that Gu Yue Yuan derived its name from “Gu Yue Jing”. The stele was relocated to the museum for the public to commemorate.
