Mr. Huang was born in a rural village in Fuxing Township and registered as a “Traditional Wood Sculpture Preserver” in Traditional Crafts Art by the Changhua County Government in 2003. He became an apprentice of shrine sculpture after graduating from elementary school. After studying “ranma” (transom) skills from a Japanese company, he skillfully combines these skills into wood sculpture. With skillful hands and techniques, Huang has turned wood sculpture into the essence of local traditional culture through his 51 years as a sculptor.
The orchid is the theme of his works. With the sturdy texture specific to Taiwan’s native stout camphor tree and his extraordinary sculpture techniques, he presents the unique, delicate, and fine postures of orchids, particularly the tender style of the flower. He won the “Huangsi Award” at the Huang Si Art Exhibition and first prize in the craft category of the 16th National Art Exhibition, and was rated a “Da Dun Arts and Crafts Master” at the 2nd Joint Exhibition of Da Dun Arts and Crafts Masters.
Sha-Jung Huang Wood Sculpture Studio is located near the “dairy cow painted village”, tortoise park, and driftwood landmark in Fubao Village, Fuxing Township, Changhua County.
