Lukang is famous for its prolific “historic monuments, humanistic artisans, and snacks”, which are regarded as the three major attractions there. Wandering alone the streets, we can see the cultural legacy of everyday life – “calligraphy and painting”.
According to the self-account of a talented native of Lukang, Wu Tsao-Hsun, aka DunBen and Wanhao SanRen, “The development of calligraphy, a carrier of Chinese characters, is an eastern way to represent thought and feeling. With a long and glorious history, it is a visual art vivid in style and diverse form, integrating the mind and the beauty of nature. With the legacy of thousands of years, for Chinese people, calligraphy is an ‘Art’ as well as the ‘Dao’.” Mr. Wu won the Award of Excellence in the Adult Category of the 2005 President’s Office Lunar New Year Calligraphy Contest.

In the gallery, there is the longest calligraphy scroll in Taiwan. This three-storey tall calligraphy scroll is finely written with scripts, being splendid and sublime. It has been a tradition for people to collect calligraphy scrolls to display their fine and elegant taste since the ancient time. For Mr. Wu, his works are diverse in style. Regardless of whether they are traditional style or customized works, they are all a collectors favorite.
“Unique and Neat Creative Souvenirs” – Name chops are essential items in daily life. Crafted with diverse materials and different styles, most of them are made with computerized calligraphy models. These name chops can be reproduced easily, hence exposed to the danger of fraud. Mr. Wu has developed a line of calligraphy name chops on which the characters are designed and written by him before carving on the stones. Each of them is unique and finely crafted, being an excellent choice for personal use or for presenting as gifts. When you visit Lukang, don’t miss the Wu Tsao-Hsun Calligraphy Museum.
