During the Qing Dynasty (around 1654-1722), a person named Chen from Quanzhou, Fujian migrated to Taiwan and settled down in what is now Pu Yan Village. He pleaded the holy spirit of Xuantian Shangdi (Xuantian deity) to reside in the village, where he had been worshipped. He built the Puyan Shun Ze Temple to worship the deity. Later, his descendants moved to Xihu and pleaded the “Er Di” (second deity) go there with them. They built the Xuantian Temple to worship the deity. Some other descendants of Chen moved to Xiushui and pleaded the “San Di” (third deity) to move with them. They built the Sansheng Temple to worship the deity. The three brother deities’ temples always gather together in various activities. Now, the members of the management committees will join together to talk about the past and put the temple in a festive mood.
The deity of the Puyan Shun Ze Temple has shown many miracles, leaving people with legends in local areas. In 1948, it caught a fire and was rebuilt. In 1998, it was refurbished. The rebuilt temple has been frequented by people over the past years. Special in design, people have to climb up two arc shape stone stairs to enter the temple. Along the stairs, there are stone walls with carved dragons at one side. The carved dragon patterns on the wall are vivid and valiant. In the temple, there are many carved wooden ornaments, that are magnificent and grand.
One thing that is very special is that there is a rare mud sculptured statue of Xuantian Shangdi. In 1948, it caught a fire and the whole temple was burnt down. When people rebuilt the temple, they sculpted a Xuantian Shangdi statue with mud. Now this statue has resided in the temple for more than five decades. Remaining intact, is can be listed as an historical monument indeed.
