Dicangwang Temple was built in the beginning of Qing Dynasty. In the 20th year of Emperor Jiaqing in Qing Dynasty (1815) when Lukang Tianhou Temple was renovated by Lukang’s eight trade associations and local gentry, partial donations were allotted to renovate Dicangwang Temple. Total repairing expanse for this renovation was more than a thousand two hundred dollars. In the 4th year of Emperor Guangxu in Qing Dynasty (1878), Dicangwang Temple was rebuilt; the temple still keeps the tablet of “Tian Zhu Zun Yan” from the 4th year of Emperor Guangxu.
During Japanese Colonial Period, Japanese set up a Mandarin (Japanese) Education Center in Dicangwang Temple. Until the 30th year of Emperor Mingzhi (1897), the Mandarin Education Center was moved to Changhua.
Dicangwang Temple mainly enshrines Dicangwan Buddha; it also enshrines Jing-Zhu-Gong, Zhu-Sheng Niang-Niang, and Shi-Dian Yan-Luo. In 1985, it was appointed as the third class historic site. In 1999, the Government appropriated fund to renovate the temple. During the renovating works, the 921 Earthquake stopped the work temporarily until 2003. On November 10th, 2004, the temple’s renovation was completed.
Dicangwang Temple has the structure layout of two structures and one yard. Because Dicangwang Temple is considered as Yin temple, eaves of the temple were designed low to highlight the temple’s gruesome feelings. There are three doors in the temple’s Sanchuan Hall. Generally the temple opens only the main door and dragon side’s door leaf. During the Zhongyuan Pudu in the seventh Lunar Month, the tiger side’s door leaf is opened, symbolizing the opening of “ghost door”.
Door gods on the front door of Dicangwang Temple are Qin-Shu-Bao and Wei-Chi-Gong. Different from general temples, Dicangwang Temple has civil official in the dragon side and Ya-Yi in the tiger side.
