Craft artist: Zi-Hui Si
• Born in 1935 in Lugang, artist Zi-Hui Si began to learn idol carving (known as “zhuangfo” (lit. idol decoration)) from his father, who was praised as the “Chisel of God” since he was 16, allowing him to develop solid skills. Today, he has become specialized in sculpture and idol carving for over 70 years.
• Idol carving skills of the Quanzhou School: Considered incomparable, this school emphasizes combination, layout, details and grace, solid and unadorned style, elaborate paint lining, and coherence.
• Received the “2014 National Crafts Achievement Award” from the National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute and the “2014 Taiwan Wood Sculpture Heritage Award” from the Miaoli County Government. Selected as the “2011 Intangible Cultural Heritage Preserver” by the Council for Cultural Affairs, Executive Yuan, registered as an “Idol Carving Preserver” of Intangible Cultural Heritage, Traditional Crafts Art, by the Changhua County Government in 2009. He also received the “10th National Heritage Award” from the Ministry of Education in 1994.
