Shih Cheng-yang was born in Lukang township in 1946. His father Shih Kun-yun, born in 1919, is a master in the construction of traditional wooden structures. The ancestors of the Shih family moved from Quanzhou, Fujian Province, to Taiwan. Shih Cheng-yang learned wood sculpture skills from his father. As a child, he constantly followed his father to temples in different places, where he saw his father at work. He became interested in the craft as a result. At the age of 18 (1963), he started working as a sculptor, while his father was not yet retired, still responsible for some of the jobs they took together. His father usually took care of the design, while he did the actual work. It wasn’t until he was 34 (1979) years old that he was wholly in charge of the family business.
　　After standing on his own feet, Shih had been doing his jobs at his family’s old house on Lutung Road. He bought a new house on Chiukang Lane in 2000. He currently plans to convert the first floor of the house into a showroom for his works and a wide variety of plant seeds that he has collected over the years.
