Located at the back of the old Chungshan Hall in the Art Museum, Changhua, the three-hundred-year-old well is the only Dutch old well in the mid Taiwan. During the Dutch colonization period, many preachers and soldiers came to drink water from the well which is why the local people called it “hongmau well” or “fanzai well”.
In addition to providing water for the nearby residents, the well has sweet and clear spring water good for making tea. Now it has a cool shelter constructed around it and the nearby Fude God that conveys, “drinking the water while pondering on its source.”
Besides providing nearby residents with drinking water, the fresh, sweet quality of the well’s spring water makes it ideal for brewing tea. A pergola has been erected in the surround area and the Earth Deity is enshrined next to the well to remind people to “Remain thankful and think of the source when taking a sip of water”.
