Born in Lugang, the hometown of a range of famous sculptors, Huang began to learn wood sculpture from Mr. Ching-I Wang at the age of 14 for him to develop a good foundation in wood sculpture. In Lugang, wood sculpture skills are mainly inherited from the Quanzhou School in mainland China and emphasize details. Therefore, artists can make vivid and lively works for flowers, birds, insects, fish, and legendary characters.
Huang even focuses his concerns on Taiwan’s nature, ecology, and environment in his wood sculpture works, such as the horseshoe crab in the wetlands and Kinmen and the black-faced spoonbill at the estuary in Qigu. By projecting his emotions onto wood through sculpture, he reawakens the public with the message: “The selfish human behaviors have damaged the habitats and ecosystems of coexisting species.” To keep a permanent record of these beautiful images, he carves their shapes with much effort to seek the beautiful memories that have been found in this place.
