From 1709 to 1719, with the name of “Shi Zhangling” - the title for an exploration company, Shi Shibang and Huang Shiqing, the esquire summoned the wanderers to complete the construction of the major canals in Babao Canal project on Changhua plain. As the mainstream of Jhuoshuei River was rapid and strong, it washed out many brooks. With unstable flow, the riverbed was shallow. People could not fetch water from it directly. As a result, there was no water to irrigate the fields. It was a great problem for them to find an appropriate inlet with gradual slope in order to lead the water into the canals. At last, a legendary “Mr. Lin” appeared and taught them the method to overcome the problem.
With Mr. Lin’s technological consultation, the Babao Canal began to function fully. Later, people built a “Mr. Lin Temple” in Changhua Irrigation Association at the branch of Canal 1 and Canal 2 of Babao Canal System at Quan Yuan Village, Ershui Township to commemorate his contributions. In Zhongyuan (Ghost) Festival each year, Shi’s descendants and local residents worship him at the temple regularly.
