Craft artist: Chen-Chun Hsu
“Embroidery” is an elaborate art with a deep sense of oriental culture. In Chinese tradition, embroidery is one of the required housewife skills of women. Engaging in the craft for over 60 years, Ms. Chen-Chun Hsu acquired a range of traditional craft skills from this when she was little. Out of her passion for embroidery, she has acquired skills including pattern embroidery, embroidery of three-inch golden lotus shoes, and pattern braiding. She has also developed “3D embroidery” through self-teaching to transform traditional 2D embroidery into vivid and lively 3D embroidery and even turn it into an emerging craft and elaborate industry.
Whether it is the 2D embroidery she has excelled at since she was young or her own self-invented 3D embroidery, each has its own style and is filled with creativity, earning her the fame of “Best Embroidery in Lugang”. Here, you can see the “dudou” (belly wrap) worn by ancient women that has stunned viewers at the National Folk Arts Event, the vividly made “tiger pillow” considered as the best sleep helper, and a range of “fragrance sachets” carried during Dragon Boat Festivals. They all carry a vintage taste in a modern sense, worthy of your visit.
