One of the clan members was named a First-Degree Scholar in 1859 (Year 9 of Xianfeng Period) and this achievement led many more of the family's descendants to achieve greatness in the county and provincial exams.
Maxing Chen Residence (Yi-Yuan Mansion) is the largest old mansion in Changhua as well as a national historic monument.
Legend has it that the mansion is so enormous that one can get lost in it! The grand compound occupies nearly one hectare of land, featuring 3 halls, 6 wing rooms, and over 90 rooms. The spatial arrangement consists of: outer courtyard, gatehouse, front courtyard, front gate, atrium, sedan chair hall, main hall, backyard, rear hall. According to local legend, Yiyuan Mansion has 99 rooms, and one could easily become disoriented in the mansion without someone from the Chen family showing you the way!
Only the trained eye will notice the words Ssu-Yu Chen inscribed above the main entrance of Yiyuan Mansion. The gate forms a contrast between the inner and outer square, making it an ancient residence. The name “Ssu-Yu Chen” was derived because the second generation descendant of the Chen Family had 4 sons, and the family hoped that each son can form a family and prosper in the future years to come, thus the name Ssu-Yu Chen was used, meaning the 4 wealthy families of the Chen clan. Today, the symbolic words Ssu-Yu Chen can still be seen engraved above the main entrance of the Yiyuan Mansion.
Flagpole base: There is a pair of flagpole bases in the front courtyard, erected by the clansmen in year 9 of Xianfeng Period (1859).
Yiyuan Mansion: The exquisite architecture was constructed using slates and red bricks. The wooden shrine features intricate carvings as well as black/red painting and gold leaf to present an elegant ambiance.
