A Rare Design of Chinese-style Temple
Rehe Temple (a county-class historic landmark), located at Ershui Township of Changhua County, was said to have been built in the first year of the Qianlong Period and renovation works were implemented in 1782. This temple, Built facing the south, is attached to street houses. Today's scale and status was achieved in 1815 after several renovations. And in the contemporary era, two renovations have been implemented in 1925 and 1961 into today's scale.
The Insight
Renhe Temple enshrines Mazu. It is a three-hall two-wing structure and both front and back halls were designed with a plain single-ridge ridge with slanting roofs. The eaves at the two sides are purported by brackets. It is an interesting and elegant design. Though compact in size, this Chinese style Temple carries an air of grander. The temple has been through several times of renovations, but it still preserves the essence of the solemn style of Southern Fujian Temple architecture. It is one of the rare architecture in Taiwan still preserved with the elements of Chinese architecture, especially the intricate and classical carving works.
The Sanchuan Hall features intriguing stone and wood carvings, especially the intricate designs by the front gate. The designs of the stone lions and lion balls are simple yet elegant. The vintage air expressed in the template design brings people into the tunnel of time. A substantial amount of valuable relics preserved inside, including a couplet made in 1815 and two repaired steles.
