The famous narrow lane in Lukang was originally a passageway between 2 streets. It is so narrow that when two people want to pass through the lane at the same time, their bodies would come in contact with each other, hence the name Moru Lane.
Intriguing street name evokes boundless imaginations.
As a matter of fact, Moru Lane is the narrow stretch of fire escape alley between two rows of houses. In order to prevent the onslaught of powerful coastal winds, local residents have narrowed the lane as much as possible, some places are barely 70cm apart. If a man and a woman come across each other face to face, it would be a rather awkward situation as they try to squeeze through the tight space. As a result, many names emerged for the lane, such as “Cover Your Chest Lane” or ”Gentleman’s Lane”, but none of them is as well-known as “Moru Lane”, which literally means “Breast Touching Lane”.
According to another legend, this was also known as Menglin Lane, because people longed for newborn boys instead of girls, they almost dream about it every day, hence the name “Menglin Lane” (which translates to Dream of Newborn Boys Lane). However, since the Taiwanese pronunciation of the street is similar to Moru Lane, it was subsequently known as “Moru Lane”.
