Lukang Ding, Xie-Yuan’s eighteenth generation ancestor, Ding Pu-Shi, came across sea to Taiwan from Jiangtou Village, Chendai Town, Quanzhou and established “Xie Yuan Hao” trading company. Because Ding Family had a lot of people, he bought three shop houses in Wufu Street to be premises for his 2nd wife and the family, 5th wife and the family, and 6th wife and the family; altogether were called “Xin Xie Yuan,” which is today’s “Jinshi-Di (Residence for Jinshi).” And the old residence was called “Jiou Xie Yuan.”

During Japanese Colonial Period, because of urban correction plan, Wufu Street was widen in the 8th year of Showa (1933), Ding family’s ancient house that was adjacent to the street was dismantled and then remolded into a western style two story facial washed terrazzo structure. In the 921 earthquake in 2000, Ding Family’s ancient house was damaged. On October 25th, 2000, it was appointed as county level historic site, and on March 17th, 2003 the government conducted the renovation works.

Ancient House of Ding’s Family was at Lukang’s Wufu St. (today’s Zhongshan Rd.). Because the street was a business street in Lukang, Ding Family set up three shop fronts on the street for conducting business. The 2nd structure’s premise was designed of Heyuan style; it was a sitting area for Ding Family. Ancient House of Ding’s Family has a structural layout of “San-Kan San-Jin Er-Yuan.” It was the most well-preserved street house type structure in Lukang.

The length of the structure in the Ancient House of Ding’s Family is more than 70 meters. In old days, Ai Gate were set up in Lukang’s streets. And residents also set up two door leaves in their houses’ back yard as self-defense facility.

Terminologies:
San-Kan San-Jin Er-Yuan (3 Kan, 3 Jin, 2 Yuan):
A shop front’s width was called Yi-Kan (1 Kan). Three shop fronts are “San-Kan (3 Kan).” The depth unit of a house is called “Jin.
