Lukang Stream had its drainage out on the south side of Lukang Old Street. It was accessible to merchant ships during the Qing Dynasty, and was the transport stream for trade with China in the early days. Furthermore, since it is adjacent to the Old Street area, it was also a gathering place for goods trading at that time. Lukang is honored as one of the three greatest antique cities in Taiwan (Tainan, Lukang and Mengjia) with the grand occasion of "Thousands of Sails Entering the Port".
However, with the passage of time, the existing drainage of Lukang Stream is out of its early function and has become the drainage ditch for collecting rainwater and sewage within the urban area nowadays.
For the "Lukang Stream Prosperity Return Plan", considering the lifestyles of local residents, the county government linked the old streets and the old urban area to increase leisure spaces for both local residents and foreign tourists. This plan is aim to rebuild the reputation of Lukang Stream as Mother River, restore the cultural landscape, and return the prosperity of Lukang Stream.
The Lukang Stream Waterfront Corridor is about 1.5 kilometers, connects plaza, green belt, streamside trail, Floating Stage, and other diversified spaces along the trail. Among which, the Floating Stage and the Sail Plaza are perfect for arts and cultural performances; the Kaiyuan Plaza and the Sail Plaza located at riverside are equipped with installation art works, the "Fu Lu Shou (福鹿獸)" and the "Lu Shang Xing Zhou (鹿上行舟)" respectively. In addition, water features are shown in the Kaiyuan Plaza every night between 6 pm and 9 pm at present time. The transformation of Lukang Stream benefits not only tourists and local residents to have beautiful rest spaces, but also the surrounding environment to be more amazing.
