The Spring of Youth was the slow-filtered and fresh water ponds of the old water source in Changhua City. There are two porticoes in front of the ponds built in the decorative elements of the renaissance styles. The two porticoes are engraved with the words- “Spring of Youth” and “Sweet Dew from Genius Loci”. The tab water is pumped from the “Youth” gate and filtered into clean water through the “Genius Loci” gate for public use. In the earlier times, the spring water was abundant and endless, so people began to call it “The Spring of Youth”.
At the time, the Bulao Spring water came from Maoluo River, and the incessant supply of water at its source Wuming River earned it the name “Bulao Spring” (undying spring).
The western Renaissance era style architecture was closely related to the supply of household water in Changhua City during the Japanese Occupation Period. Elegant capitals on either side complement the Bulao Spring’s 2 pediments. One is engraved with “Bulao Spring”, while the other is carved with words “Pristine land yields sweet nectar”. The words “Completed in Year 3 of Taisho Period” was engraved on the doorpost when the expansion project was undertaken at the time. During that period, the water corporation extracted water from “Bu” gate, which was filtered and sent to the “Di” gate slow filter pool for further filtration using gravel before supplying it to the public.
Several reconstructions were commissioned due to damage or wear and tear, but its original appearance has always been retained. In 1992, when the fountainhead dried up, the “Bulao Spring” was converted into a fresh water pool for water pressurization and distribution purposes. From the photo on the slate and tiles, a fountainhead custodian dressed in Japanese Occupation Period clothing demonstrates the tight security around the fountainhead at the time. Concealed in a corner of the water corporation, Bulao Spring has remained steadfast for over a century. The shack at the back served as the chemical control room, sharing the same style as Bulao Spring, standing elegantly in the park. When the sunlight falls down through the leaves of the century old camphor, the mild fragrance emanated by the tree presents a unique romantic atmosphere. During the day, wedding photographers often bring newlyweds here for their wedding photos, capturing beautiful images!
