The park is a perfect blend of nature and culture through the century-old “Wei Chengmei Hall” historic house and the unique “Garden HE-DE.” The historic house is a testament to the Wei family’s difficult journey to Taiwan, but also of the Confucian values they brought that made the area an important gathering of Fujian and Hakka culture. The garden shows off ancient gardening techniques, some of the finest in Taiwan, as well as many old trees hidden in the beautiful landscape.
The restoration of Chuan Xi Study, a part of Wei Chengmei Hall, set a precedent for “restoration of historic buildings in Taiwan”. Scientific analysis was used to estimate the time and cost of restoration. The technique provides a useful reference for future restoration projects. A 1:1 scale model was built for the most complex part of the restoration project (where there is a big difference in height between the point the second courtyard meets the left wing) to experiment with all traditional techniques before they are used in the actual restoration work.
57 pine trees and 26 cypress trees were planted throughout He Garden in memory of the founders Mr. Wei He-De and Hsieh Ru-Syue. The evergreen trees remind everyone to remember their roots and look after their parents. A 550 year-old Burmese Rosewood tree is now a popular photo attraction for visitors to the garden. The plantings in the garden are organized by seasons. There are Camellias between December and March, Pink Shower Tree in April , Zinnia between July and September, and Poinsettia from October to December. The Bald Cypress leaves turn red between January and March for a touch of the exotic atmosphere from North America. They also form an emerald green walking trail from April through to December. When the Zinnia symbolizing love are in full bloom between May and November, the riot of purples and reds form a breathtaking sight.
