In the 9th year of Emperor Dazheng (1920), Taiwan implemented administrative reform, and Lukang became Lukang Street, Changhua County, Taichung State. After the reformation of street district system, Lukang Jieyichang (today’s Township Office) was built to be the highest administrative institution in Lukang. The construction started in April 1st at the 10th year of Emperor Showa (1935) and completed in October 20th at the same year, taking more than 6 months.

In the 10th year of Emperor Showa, the Mayor’s dormitory was built next to Lukang Jieyichang to be Lukang Mayor’s residence. In the organization, Lukang was set up one position to be the Mayor. The 1st Street Mayor was Xia-Jiao Qing Chang Hang’s Chen, Huai-Cheng. The 2nd Street Mayor was Japanese Shinjiro Yoshida. After the dormitory was built, Shinjiro Yoshida was the first mayor, who moved into the dormitory.

Lukang Mayor’s residence was a Japanese style wood structure. The base was elevated and the footings mostly were made by brick columns or wood columns; those were helpful for ventilation and preventing humid floor and borer’s threats. Externally Lukang Mayor’s residence were covered with weather boards and internally the residence was partitioned by placing woven bamboo in-between mud walls; the overall design showed wood structure’s simple style in Japanese Colonial Period. After Restoration, Lukang Mayor’s residence once was left unused. In a later time, it once was Lukang Township Office’s warehouse.

On November 20th, 2002, it was registered to be a historic building. The restoration started on September 17th, 2003 and completed in July 2004. On January 30th, 2005, a inauguration ceremony was held for the Mayor’s residence. At the same time, the residence was given to Lukang Township Office for operation and administration. In future, it is planed to be used as “Research Institute of Local Culture and History.” Gorgeous Mayor’s Residence-1
