Baguashan Mountain Trail

1、Giant Buddha Circular Trail (A tour to culture and history)
Location: Changhua City
Length: approximately 3.5km
A full journey takes around 1.5hours
Route Planning: Literary Walk → Giant Buddha Scenic Area → Anti-Japanese Martyrs Memorial Park → Bagua Mountain Eco-tourism service center → C119 Military Aircraft Park → Water Company (Spring of Youth)
Trail Features: The trail can be accessed from Guashan Road by the Baguashan Archway. A stairway by the Bureau of Cultural Affairs leads to the trail and the trail passes through the Literary Walk, Yinqiao Waterfall, and the famous Giant Buddha. Walk along the path under the archway, you will arrive at the Baguashann Visitor Service Center and C119 Park. It is a good place to take a picture with the decommissioned aircraft and take a challenge on the pebble stone walk. The mid-way point “Guashan Full Moon Restaurant” is one of the best spots for a panoramic view of the sky of Changhua City. Ecological Service Center offers information services and host interesting exhibitions. Plus, the well-planned trail facilities, the center provides as a good spot for eco-knowledge and family outings.

2、Buzzard Watching Trail (Lushankeng Trail) (Eco-Buzzard Tour)
Location: Changhua City
Length: approximately 5.3km
A full journey takes around 3 hours
Route Planning: Hugang Road entrance→Buzzard Watching Terrace→Lushankeng Trail→Baguashan Mountain Ridge Eco-Tourism Visitor Service Center
Trail Features: March to April is the best season to watch buzzards in the Baguashan area. This is one of the best buzzard watching location inside of the Giant Buddha Scenic Area. It is trail complete with healthy activities and eco-tourism. It is accessible from County 139 (Hugang Road). Enter the trail from the sign next to the Buzzard Watching Terrace and walk along to the Water Company at Longsian N. Road before turning out from the trail. This route is farther, but the view is fantastic. Signboards are available along the way to give information and directions. This place also boasts one of the most fantastic sunset views in the area.

3、Hugang Road Trail (A cultural walk)
Location: Changhua City
Length: approximately 3km
A full journey takes around 1.5hours
Route planning: start from the Water Company (junction of Hugang and Gongyuan Road)→ Hugang Road → Veterans' Home→ Entrance of Buzzard-watching Terrace → Education Radio Station→ Qikuang Martyrs' Cemetery.
Trail Features: Starting from the Water Company at the junction of Hugang and Park Road, a stretch of boardwalk runs along Hugang Road. The trail passes through the Veteran's Home, entrance of Buzzard-watching Terrace, and Education Radio Station, and ends at the “Sky Ladder” and Qikuang Martyrs' Cemetery. It is a mild and comfortable walk shaded with lush greenery, suitable for a leisurely walk.

4、Taoyuanli Forest Trails (A buzzard-watching tour)
Location: Changhua City
Length: approximately 5km
A full journey takes around 2.5hours
Route Planning: Back gate of National Changhua University of Education→ entrance of Taoyuanli Forest Trail → Bamboo forest and fruit orchards → The right-side branch goes to Sanqing Taoist Monastery and the left-side branch leads to National Changhua University of Education, Joy Garden, and Bagua Buddhist Monastery.
Trail Features: Forest trails located in the neighborhood of Taoyuan Community is formed by a group of trails. The diverse landscape and well-planned facilities make it one of the favorite hiking routes for the local residents. Clear road signs lead the way through the trail, which passes through the Bagua Buddhist Monastery, Joy Garden, and a number of temples. You may come across amazing sighting of “eagle surging” during the buzzard season.

5、Hushanyan Trail (A tour of culture)
Location: Huatan Township
Length: approximately 6km
A full journey takes around 3 to 4 hours
Route Planning: Hushanyan → Daling Lane → Puji Temple → Leisure farm → Tourist fruit orchards
Trail Features: A simple hiking trail can be accessed from the path behind Hushanyan Buddhist Monastery. It is a relatively short trail filled with fresh air. Lush greens are the best sight of this trail. The industrial service road behind Daling Lane was not planned with hiking trails, but the existing service road was redesigned to include a bicycle track later. This moderate trail was discovered by the trail walkers and became one of the favorite trails in the area. In addition to the beautiful hill views, the remote views of the grand engineering wonders, raised highways, have also become part of the featured landscape. Along the trail, the refreshing rustic view is a treat to the eyes, the restaurants selling mountain delights offer sumptuous gourmet foods, and the starfruit orchards offer not only juicy fruit but also fruit-picking fun. It is a relaxing destination for the busy urbanites.

6、Statue of Erawan BuddhaTung Blossom Trail (A tour of Buddha and beautiful flowers)
Location: Changhua City
Length: approximately 5km

Route Planning: County 139 Expressway → Yinhangshan Dairy Farm → Tung Blossom Trail → Erawan Shrine and Yinhangshan Ranch → County 139 Expressway
Trail Features: The trail can be accessed from the entrance by County 139 Expressway. After entering the dairy farm areas, milk cows that are rarely seen in the cities are herded in flocks. It is an interesting sight that will make linger for a little longer. The way along the industrial service road is a slow walk adorned by Tung trees. In mid-April every year, petals of Tung blossoms float down in the air like the white snowflakes. The special sight is fantastic and enchanting. And the Erawan Shrine at the end of the trail is now a full-fledge temple facility in a sizable scale. Other than paying your tribute to Erawan Buddha, the sight of the High-speed Rail is also another unique view. The sight of the “Mercedes” trains zoom through the horizon is also a sight not to be missed. The attentive temple administration even posts the train schedules for the visitors. It one of the top-picks for a religious and sightseeing tour. By the trail, the Yinhangshan Hejia Ranch is equipped with a recreational area, offering a different mode of recreation aside from trail walking activities.

7、Tiaoshui Trail (Water-Porters' Trail)(A tour of history and beautiful sceneries)
Location: Fenyuan Township
Length: approximately 2km
A full journey takes around 1.5hours
Route Planning: Entrance located next to No. 159 Sec. 1 Yuancao Rd. Xitou Village Fenyuan Township → Japanese shrine Arch → Donglong Temple → Shinto → trail entrance → exit at Ln. 672, Sec. 1 Dazhang Road
Trail Features: Tiaoshui Trail (Water-Porters' Trail) was one of the old trails connecting Dazhu and Xitou Villages of Fenyuan Township. In Qing Dynasty, the road system was not fully developed. To solve the problem of water for domestic use, the earlier settlers began to search for water sources. At this very location, a spring with abundant water was found. Thus, two wells were dug for the village residents. This trail was the road, through which the village residents transport their water. This trail can be accessed from the Japanese archway by No. 159 Sec. 1 Yuancao Road Fenyuan Township. The full length is approximately 2km, featuring thick Lychee and Longgan woods, the “sky ladder”, pergolas, and old wells. The eco-system in this area is also quite well developed. It is also a good place for bird watching.

8、Bishayan Trail (A tour of culture and beautiful sceneries)
Location: Fenyuan Township
This trail starts from Bishan Temple. It can be accessed from the stairs by the pergola. Bishan Temple is a quiet and serene place, a good place for a moment of relaxation. Although this trail has been damaged by flood, the administrative authorities have made adequate repair and further improvements. The lush greenery and nostalgic air will give you a very different experience.

9、Dongbei Xiaolingding (A walk of buzzards)
Location: Yuanlin Township
Length: approximately 3km
A full journey takes around 1 hour
Route planning: Sanjiao Road Fude Bridge → Dongbei Early Bird Club→ Dongbei Bridge → Huguo Bridge → Car Park → Hiking Trail → Exit (County 139 Expressway)
Trail Features: This trail is located at Dongbei of Yuanlin Township. It can be accessed from the Fude Bridge at Sec. 5 Shanjiao Rd. Thick crowns of Taiwanese Goldenrain Tree (koelreuteria paniculata), Longgan, and osmanthus shade the trail and cheering bird chirping makes strolling on this pebble trail a relaxing experience. View terraces and pergolas have also been built to provide the visitors a resting place. And the full journey is around 3km. This trail has become one of the favorite exercise spot for the local residents; therefore, a workout area for the Dongbei Early Bird Club was set up at the entrance area.

10、Erlun Bikers' Lodge Hiking Trail (A tour of LOHAS fun)
Location: Yuanlin Township
Length: approximately 2.7km
A full journey takes around 1 hour
Route Planning: Dongshan Zhengxing Temple → high-speed rail culvert· Dafeng Lane → cabins → view terrace → exit ( County 139 Expressway)
Trail Features: Pass through the high-speed rail culvert from the Dongshan Police Station and Zhengxing Temple area and walk uphill along Dafeng Lane of Dafengli or from Yuhe Temple to reach the entrance. Direction signs are available along the way, and a ride along the way after passing a cabin built by the bikers, will lead you to the view terrace, which opens the landscape into a bird's-eye view of Yuanlin Township. It is a relaxing trail characterized by lush greenery.

11、Eagle Cave Trail (A tour of LOHAS fun)
Location: Yuanlin Township
Length: approximately 3.6km
A full journey takes around 2 hours
Route planning: start from Tianhua Temple → move along Lane 630→ water tower → Chung Chou Institute of Technology → Cilin Lane → Tianhua Temple
Trail Features: This trail is more secluded; therefore, very few people know about it or visit it. The trail features the giant three-hundred years old maple trees and cooling shade, starfruit, lychee, bamboo, and mixed woods. It is a slightly steep trail, offering a relatively effective exercise, especially the last two hundred meters. Overall, it is considered a cool and comfortable trail.

12、Dairenkeng Longding Trail (A tour of LOHAS fun)
Location: Yuanlin Township
Length: approximately 4km
A full journey takes around 50 minutes
Route Planning: Hushui Lane of Yuanlin Township → Fenshan Temple (Nantou City)
Trail Features: It was the most convenient commercial way from Yuanlin to Nantou in the old times. After repair and improvement, this trail has been developed into a good recreational facility. Although we are not able to experience the laborious work of the earlier settlers, it is worth the effort to challenge the walk. You can also visit Fengshan Temple when you reach the end of the trail.

13、Baiguoshan Hiking Trail (Baigan Trail) (A tour of LOHAS fun)
Location: Yuanlin Township
Length: approximately 3km
A full journey takes around 2 hours
Route planning: The Baikan Trail Area can be accessed from Chushui Lane; the Baikan Trail Area include the Erbaikan, Sanbaikan, and Sibaikan trails (two, three, and four hundred stair trails). These three trails lead to the main ridge of the mountain range.
Trail Features: Baiguoshan Hiking Trail is located at the Baiguoshan area of Yuanlin Township, also known as the Sibaikan Trail (four-hundred stairs trail). It is a system of three trails, including the Erbaikan, Sanbaikan, and Sibaikan Trails (two, three, and four hundred stairs trails). These three trails lead to the main ridge of the mountain range. The view at the top canvasses the mountains in the area and Yuanlin city center. It has become one of the top trails for the local residents. The resting pergolas, diversified exercise facilities, and the Baiguoshan Recreational Area offer the users not just a trail but a multi-functional recreational facility. The wide-angle bird's-eye view makes it one of the most popular choice for night views and the coffee shops and restaurants provide a variety of choices of summer night outing.

14、Wolongpo Trail (A hiking and sightseeing tour)
Location: Yuanlin Township
Length: approximately 3km
A full journey takes around 1.5hours
Route Planning: Wolongpo entry → Fengtian Temple → Changshou Pavilion → view terrace → Tengshan Bridge
Trail Features: Located on Yuannan Road, this short trail is also known as the Butterfly Trail for the flock after flock of butterflies swarm in this area in spring and summer. The diversified forests along the trails nurture a rich ecology and provide cooling shade to the trail hikers. It is a trail with adequate length and slow slopes, suitable for family activities. The acacia and mixed woods provide cooling shades and the resting pergolas offer great views to the panoramic view of the Tengshan Bridge Trail and Yuanlin city center.

15、Shibawan Trail (An exploration of the pioneers' life)
Location: Shetou Township
Length: approximately 2.3km
A full journey takes around 1.5hours
Route Planning: Qingshuiyan Car Park → Minjian Township, Nantou County
Trail Features: This trail is located at the end of the Qingshuiyan Forest Park. It has been a major traffic route for the Changhua and Nantou County residents since the Qing Dynasty. It was also known as the Tiaoyan Trail- the Salt-carring Trail. The original look of the primary hills and woods offer a refreshing and unique experience and the pebble trail surface retains the original look of the trail. This trail can be accessed from the path by the Qingshuiyan car park and links to Minjian Township of Nantou County.

16、Guanyinshan Wufeng TrailCentral Ridge Trail (An exploration of the pioneers' life)
Location: Shetou Township
Length: approximately 1.5km
A full journey takes around 1.5hours
Route Planning: Entrance before Qingshuiyan swimming pool → entrances of hiking trail to the individual peaks (except the fourth peak) → Central Ridge
Trail Features: Guanyin Hiking Trail is located inside of the Qingshuiyan Recreational Area. From the entrances to the first and fifth peak trails, you will reach the Qingshuiyan Bridge of the Qingshuiyan Forest Park. And if you move forward a little farther, you will see the entrances to the second and third peak trails. Exercise and workout facilities, resting plazas, steel horse-shape exercise equipments, horizontal bars, rocking chairs, and pergolas have been set up along the way. And by the pergolas on top of the second and third peaks, you will find trails to the fourth and fifth peaks and the central ridge.

17、Houtanjing Hiking Trail (An exploration of pioneers' life)
Location: Shetou Township
Length: approximately 4km
A full journey takes around 2 hours
Route planning: Changqing Bicycle Track → Nantou City Houtanjing Recreational Area
Trail Features: This trail links the Houtanjing Recreation Area in Nantou County to the Hiking Trail along the Changqing Bicycle Track. Many people access the two different recreational areas through this beautiful trail.

18、Hengshan Trail (An exploration of pioneers' life)
Location: Shetou Township
Length: approximately 2km
A full journey takes around 1.5hours
Route Planning: Qingshuiyan Car Park→ boardwalk → bicycle track → view terrace → steep slope→ Hengshan Cliff
Trail Features: Hengshan, 443 meters in elevation, is the peak of the Baguanshan Mountain Range. The trail is characterized by an easy walk, diversified flora and fauna, and a cheering environment along the way. The view terraces offer fantastic bird's-eye view to the Changhua Plain. This is also one of the best spots for buzzard watching in the south side of Baguashan area. In March around the vernal equinox time, buzzards are common sights in this area. The tablelands and Hengshan Cliff created by the power of Zhuoshui Creek turn this trail into a perfect classroom for nature science education.

19、Qilinshan Trail (An exploration of pioneers' life)
Location: Tianzhong Township
Length: approximately 2.6km
A full journey takes around 2 hours
Route Planning: Zantian Temple archway → Zantian Temple→ Changqing Bicycle Track
Trail Features: The new trail behind Zantian Temple (known as the Scholar and Martial Temple locally) and Pusian Temple is named the Qilinshan Trail after the name of the mountain. View terraces, resting pergolas, and workout facilities have been set up along the way. It is a LOHAS forest trail combined with beautiful sceneries, recreation, and exercise. This trail connects to the Changqing Bicycle Track at the end and boasts views of beautiful landscape. The food stalls along the way also make this trail an interesting recreation center.

20. Tianzhong Forest Park, Chishuiqi Trail (A nostalgic walk)
Location: Tianzhong Township
Length: approximately 1km
A full journey takes approximately 1.5 hours.
Route Planning: Entrance from Da Der Commercial and Technical Vocational School
Trail Features: Tianzhong Forest Park, located at the east end of Tianzhong Township, features lush greenery, varied topography, and diversified vegetation. Several nature trails wind through the ridgelines. This trail also links to the "Tea Trail", which welcomes the visitors with cheering tea aroma.
Chishuiqi was originally an uphill slope between Tianzhong and Nantou. The trail cuts through a canvass of grassland, opening out to the horizon. Tables and stools are available for you to put up your feet and enjoy the fresh breezes. There are several theme areas along the way, including the Fauna and Flora Ecology Park and the Boulder Park, as well as diversified ecological resources, making it a perfect trail for family outing.

21. Tea Trail (A LOHAS walk through tea plantations)
Location: Tianzhong Township
Length: approximately 2.6km
A full journey takes approximately 2 hours.
Route Planning: Tianzhong Forest Park→Songboling Tea Plantation Area→Shoutian Temple→Xiashui→Ershui
Trail Features: This trail crosses through the Nantou Songboling Tea Plantation area and Tianzhong Forest Park. The full length stretches to 2.6 km, stringing up a series of tea plantations. Signs are available along the way to guide the visitors through the process of tea making. Aside from tea aroma, this trail boasts panoramic views of the beautiful townships of Ershui, Tianzhong, and Yuanlin. The wide-open view will lighten your heart.

22. Erbawan Trail (A nostalgic walk)
Location: Ershui Township
Length: approximately 2km
A full journey takes approximately 1.5 hours.
Route Planning: Go straight uphill from Dah Chiou Yuan Community Farm; you will arrive at the entrance of the Erbawan Trail.
Trail Features: This trail was originally a footpath of Liuzaikeng (Ershui Township, Changhua County) or Daliukeng (Minjian County), leading all the way up to the top of the hill. This one-hundred-year-old trail is famous for its "28 turns". Therefore, local residents called it the "28-Twist Road". It is a rather challenging trail, since it winds uphill through 28 turns to go from Songbokeng to Ershui and part of the trail is quite steep. It is considered a challenger-class trail, so the general trail walkers do not usually pick this route.

23. Dengmiao Trail and Kengneikeng Trail (A LOHAS eco-tour)
Location: Ershui Township
Length: approximately 3km
A full journey take approximately 2 hours.
Route Planning: Ershui Fengbo Plaza→Songboling Tea Plantation area→Shoutian Temple→View Terrace→Kengneikeng Trail
Trail Features: This trail is also called the Fengbo Trail. It links Ershui to Shoutian Temple and was one of the major access routes linking between Ershui and Minjian in the earlier times. Currently, the two ends of the trail are Fengbo Plaza and Shoutian Temple. In addition to the beautiful view, the diversified ecology is also a major feature of this trail. If you are lucky, you may be greeted by the adorable Formosan Macaques. Passed Shoutian Temple, the trail continues under the name of Kengneikeng Trail, which is one of the favorite fitness walk routes for local residents. The lush greenery and convenient facilities (recreation area, rest platforms, and view terraces) make it a good choice for leisure walk and picnic.
