Lantern
灯笼Lantern
The bamboo-paper lantern has had a long history in the vintage township of Lukang (Changhua County). It is often mentioned in parallel with the name Lukang. In this town, lanterns are seen everywhere in a wide variety of styles.

Eaach Master Crafter has a Unique Style
Each master lantern crafter in Lukang has a unique style. Under the skillful hands of the masters of traditional lanterns, every lantern is dressed in lively totems of the vintage styles and bright colors. A young lantern crafter, who has a unique painting style, applied design patents for each of his lanterns. It is quite a characteristic lantern master of the new generation.

Fixed frame is the mainstream in Lukang lanterns
There are two styles of lanterns- Fuzhou and Quanzhou styles. The main difference is in the frame. The Fuzhou style features retractable frames; these are frames that can be folded like an umbrella. The Quanzhou style features fixed frames. The main variety of Lukang's lanterns is the Quanzhou style.

Fading of the traditional arts
An introduction to Lukang's lanterns must start from the "rough shell". There were many families manufacturing the "rough shell" in Lukang in the earlier times. Now, only three manufacturers are left. This traditional craft is facing the fate of distinction.

The mission to pass down the passion
Along the changes in the socio-economy, the traditional crafts are fast disappearing. The older generation lantern masters are aware of the fading of this art. Therefore, they took on the mission to pass down this cultural asset. Now several lantern masters are teaching the craft in the social education centers, culture centers, folk art events, and workshops for the general public and teachers of all levels.
